Finding the Perfect House

Buying the perfect house can be a great experience as you have the opportunity to set down roots and have a place of your own where you can begin making memories with your family. Buying a house is also a good financial decision in many cases, as you can avoid paying rent and instead pay a mortgage that will allow you to own your property. As your home appreciates in value, the worth of your investment will grow.

When you start the process of finding a home, you need to consider both whether it is a good investment and whether it will work for you and your family both now and in the long-term.  In order to find the perfect house, you also need to know where you should look.

Where to Find a Home to Buy

When you begin looking for a home, there are a number of different resources that you can use in order to find the house of your dreams. Some of the possible resources that can help you to find your perfect house include:

  • A real estate agent. Real estate agents have their finger on the pulse of the local market and understand the real estate opportunities that exist in your area. A dedicated buyers agent will have your best interests at heart and will devote his or her sole focus to helping you to find the right home. The best part is, the real estate agent gets paid a commission by the seller of the home so you can get the benefit of his professional expertise without having to pay a fee directly.
  • MLS Searches. MLS stands for Multiple Listing Service. MLS is a database of all properties for sale in a local area. There are a number of websites that will allow you to conduct free MLS searches, including local real estate websites in your area as well as MLS.com.  You can generally refine your search by geographic location and sometimes even specify the specific amenities that you want to look for such as the minimum number of bedrooms, the square footage, the amount of land you need and the price of the homes you want to see.  Searching the MLS is a great way to get started in your search for a property.
  • Online real estate search websites. Sites such as Realtor.com and Zillow.com allow you to search properties and obtain information such as estimates on local taxes, nearby home sales and the listing history for the home. Realtor.com and Zillow use MLS data as well as public records and other information to provide you with comprehensive information that is helpful in your home search.
  • Newspapers and real estate magazines. Your local newspaper should have a section for real estate listings, and there are also local magazines published in most areas that have a catalog of houses that you can take a look at. These print materials may not be as up-to-date or as detailed as online materials but they are another useful source of information and are easy to read.
  • Online classifieds. Online classified services such as Craigslist can include properties listed for sale by owner that may not be posted on the MLS.

By making use of all of these different resources, you should be able to find the perfect home for you.
