Money Advice for Moving- How Not to Blow Your Budget

Moving can be a difficult and expensive proposition as you need to have all of your worldly belongings packed up and transported to your new destination. While moving may be everyone’s least favorite thing to do, there are at least some ways that you can ensure that it doesn’t become a budget-buster as well. It is important to plan ahead and make smart choices when deciding how to set up your move so you do not end up spending more than you should in the process.

Tips for Moving Without Blowing Your Budget

When you are getting ready to move, consider following these key tips in order to ensure that your costs do not get out-of-control:

  • Sort through your belongings to decide what is worth keeping and what should be sold or given away. The last thing that you want to do is pay to move boxes of junk you don’t need or old furniture that you won’t use in your new house.  Carefully think about which of your possessions you want to move to your new destination and which you can simply replace upon arrival (or skip replacing at all). Unwanted furniture or items that won’t fit well in your new home can be sold on Craigslist or other free online classifieds in order to save you money on moving and to generate a little bit of extra cash to pay your expenses.
  • Consider what you can do on your own. Are you able to pack your belongings yourself or do you need someone to take care of that for you?  Would it be possible for you to rent a moving truck and drive your own belongings to your destination rather than paying for someone to take care of the move? What about unpacking… is it possible for you to unload the truck on your own or with family and friends to help? The more aspects of your move you hire out, the higher the costs will be.
  • Shop around for different alternatives. Rather than hiring a full-service moving company, for example, could you use a Pods service or a motor freight company that will allow you to load your belongings onto a cargo container and move them aboard a larger truck?  If you are able to take advantage of a service that is not a dedicated moving truck only transporting your own goods, you can save a lot of money. In addition to Pods, there are also alternatives such as United Mayflower that offer a similar moving option, so be sure to shop around if you decide this is the right choice for you.
By considering these tips, hopefully you can help to make your move much more affordable.  You should, however, ensure that your belongings are protected for the journey. Using inexperienced or unlicensed movers may be much more of a headache than it is worth. You should also get a detailed written price quote and know exactly what your quote includes before you agree to any type of move. You don’t want to get a surprise bill at the end and find out your move cost much more than you anticipated spending.
